HAZARD

Any real or potential condition that can cause injury or death, and or damage to or loss of equipment or property.

HAZARD ANALYSIS

A systematic analysis of a system operation performed to identify hazards and make recommendations for their elimination or control during all life-cycle phases. (NTSC)

HAZARD CRITICALITY

The minimum hazard risk or index value which can be accepted for a given potential hazardous situation. (NTSC)

HAZARD INDEX

A quantitative measure, combining the numerical probability of occurrence with a hazard severity. (NTSC)

HAZARD LEVEL

A qualitative measure of the worst potential consequences that could be caused by a specific hazard. Category I: Catastrophic; may cause death or system loss. Category II: Critical; may cause severe injury, server occupational illness, or major system damage. Category…

HAZARD MANAGEMENT

Also known as Loss Control. An element of the system safety management function that evaluates the safety effects of potential hazards considering acceptance, control, or elimination of such hazards with respect to expenditure or resources. The feasibility of hazard elimination…

HAZARD PROBABILITY

The probability that a hazard will occur during the planned life of the system. Hazard probability may be expressed in quantitative or qualitative terms. Examples of a hazard probability ranking systems are: A. Frequent B. Probable C. Occasional D. Remote…

HAZARD RATE

The instantaneous failure rate which is the limit of the average failure rate as the interval length approaches zero. It is given by the formula: Z(t)=f(t)/R(t) is the density function and R(t) is the reliability function of the continuous variable…

HAZARD RESOLUTION

The analysis and subsequent actions taken to reduce, to the lowest level practical, the risk associated with an identified hazard. (NTSC)

HAZMAT

Hazardous materials and wastes which are managed by federal Environmental Protection Act ( EPA) regulations and by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control. DTSC includes all oil and lubrication substances, solvents and fuels. Also includes hazardous wastes whose accumulation…
