PASS

A means of transit prepayment , usually a card carrying some identification that is displayed to the driver or clerk in place of paying a cash fare.

PASSAGEWAY

An enclosed space or structure traversing over or under traffic or other barriers for the convenient passage of patrons entering or exiting the system. It may connect to the paid or unpaid area.

PASSENGER CAR EQUIVALENCE (PCE)

The representation of larger vehicles, such as buses, as equal to a quantity of automobiles (passenger cars) for use in level of service and capacity analyses. (TRB)

PASSENGER CONTROLS

A system of railings, booths, turnstiles, and other fixtures for collecting fares and otherwise directing the movement of passengers. The controls may also be used to maintain the distinction between fare-paid and unpaid people. (TRB)

PASSENGER COUNT

A count of the passengers on a vehicle or who use a particular facility. (TRB)

PASSENGER INFORMATION UNIT

Automated Fare Collection (AFC) station equipment which will be located in each control area to provide customers with information about the value remaining on the fare media.

PASSENGER LOAD

The number of passengers on a transit unit (vehicle or train) at a specified point. (TRB)
