REVERSIBLE BUS LANE

A highway or street lane that is reserved for the exclusive use of buses and other high-occupancy vehicles and other high-occupancy vehicles and that can be operated in alternate directions during the two peak-hour periods. It may be the center lane in an arterial street that is used for left-turning traffic in off-peak hours. Usually, bus operators who use this facility are required to have special training and a permit, and the buses may be subject to access or operation controls or both. (TRB)
