April 11: This Date in Los Angeles Transportation History

1961:  The California Toll Bridge Authority sells $5,000,000 in revenue bonds for construction of a suspension bridge over the main channel of Los Angeles Harbor between San Pedro and terminal Island.

1979:  The federal Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) notifies Southern California Rapid Transit District that it has approved funding for 1,200 new buses.

SCRTD General Manager Jack R. Gilstrap notes that:

“A public transit investment in Los Angeles is worthwhile — just last month we recorded our highest level of ridership ever…Our next goal is to convince Washington to let us move forward on a rail rapid transit project in our most densely populated area.”
