August 10: This Date in Los Angeles Transportation History

2007:  Heavy construction for the Metro Expo Line begins.

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry, who heads the Exposition Metro Line Construction Authority, kicks off the event and introduces speakers that include Metro Board Chair Pam O’Connor, Councilman Bernard Parks, Assemblyman Mike Davis, County Supervisors Zev Yaroslavsky and Yvonne Braithwaite Burke, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Culver City Mayor Alan Corlin and Expo Line CEO Rick Thorpe.

The heavy construction begins with drilling 30-foot holes along the alignment in preparation for excavation of a 2,700 foot long, 24-foot trench that parallels Exposition Boulevard between Flower Street and Pardee Way on the University of Southern California campus.
