August 17: This Date in Los Angeles Transportation History

1923:  The California State Highway Engineer becomes the executive officer of the Highway Commission without other duties, leaving him free to dedicate his “time, thought and energy to the building of the best possible highways for the people of California.”

More information about the California Highway Commission becoming an entity separate from the California Department of Public Works can be found in the January, 1924 issue of California Highways magazine, the very first issue of this publication.

We systematically digitized all issues of California Highways (subsequently renamed: California Highways and Public Works) into full-text digital files (1924 – 1967).

1994:  Tunneling for the Metro Red Line subway causes sinkage under Hollywood Boulevard.
