February 22: This Date in Los Angeles Transportation History

2002:  State, local and Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials join California Governor Gray Davis at the Sherman Oaks Galleria to mark the official opening of the $22.7 million San Diego (405) Freeway carpool lane through the Sepulveda Pass.

Approximately 90% of the carpool lane’s funding comes from local sales taxes.

Opened to the public on January 8, the carpool lane saves drivers up to about 15 minutes per trip on one of the slowest stretches of area freeways.

During morning and afternoon commutes, traffic averages between 30 mph and 50 mph  between the Ventura Freeway interchange and Waterford Street near Westwood.
