1903: The California Pacific narrow-gauge interurban rail line from Los Angeles to San Pedro opens.
1907: The California state legislature passes a law creating the Department of Engineering, charged with maintaining all state highways.
1994: Groundbreaking for the Metro Red Line Segment 3 is held at North Hollywood. The 6.3-mile Segment 3 links Hollywood / Vine Station to North Hollywood via the Cahuenga Pass and Universal City.
Tunnel excavation later begins at the groundbreaking site and continues south to Universal City.
The first tunneling contract, in the amount of $65.4 million, is awarded to Ohbayashi Corporation, which is responsible for the first two miles of twin tunnels, mostly under Lankershim Boulevard.
The budget for the Red Line from Hollywood to North Hollywood, known as “Segment 3,” is $2.46 billion. 57% of the budget comes from federal funding, 30% from local funding, and approximately 13% from state funding.
