May 20: This Date in Los Angeles Transportation History

2016:  The second phase of the Metro Exposition Line opens between Culver City and downtown Santa Monica opens.

One of the opening day riders is 84-year old Alan Weeks, a retired Metro employee who was also on the last Pacific Electric streetcar to Santa Monica in 1953.

This video includes recollections of his (and others’) memories early rail to Santa Monica, and how he sees the new Expo Line.

Thousands of Weeks’ photographs documenting Los Angeles rail and buses from the 1940s through the present day can be found in the Metro Research Library & Archives’ Pacific Electric, Los Angeles Railway, and other Flickr collections.
