1938:  The State of California awards a contract for the reconstruction of the Newhall Pass highway alignment between the San Fernando Valley and the Mojave Desert.

1989:  Almost three years after the initial groundbreaking ceremony, the Metro Red Line tunnel breaks through at Civic Center Station, marking the first station connection to Union Station.
