April 28: This Date in Los Angeles Transportation History

1988:  The Southern California Rapid Transit District awards the manufacturing contract for subway cars on the forthcoming Metro Rail system.

Breda Costruzioni Ferroviarie, an Italian firm that has built rail cars for Washington, D.C. and Cleveland, will build the cars for the first 4.4-miles of Metro Rail (Red Line MOS-1).
