July 21: This Date in Los Angeles Transportation History

2006:  Construction of the Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension project reaches a milestone when “Lola” — one of two massive tunnel boring machines — breaks through at the 1st and Soto Streets underground construction site in Boyle Heights.

Lola took 148 days to tunnel the 2,800 feet, beginning at Boyle Street on February 23.  More information can be found in the July 25, 2006 issue of the MyMetro employee news digest.
