October 22: This Date in Los Angeles Transportation History

1995:  Buses officially begin servicing the newest Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority transit facility as the 2.25 acre Gateway Multimodal Transportation Center’s Patsaouras Bus Plaza, Union Station East Portal and four-story parking garage are opened.The new transit center provides convenient access to the Metro Red Line subway, Metrolink commuter rail service and Amtrak.

It also serves as a critical transfer point for buses operated by other transit agencies, including Gardena Transit, Torrance Transit, Los Angeles Department of Transportation and other carriers.

The East Portal features a 68-foot tall hemispherical glass dome at its entrance.  A grand opening ceremony is held October 24.
