2005: Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announces that the American Public Transportation Association Peer Review Tunneling Panel’s preliminary findings indicate that it is safe to build a subway along the Wilshire Corridor.

A moratorium on tunneling under Wilshire Boulevard had previously been instituted following the explosion of methane gas in subway construction on March 24, 1985.

The U.S. House of Representatives repealed the 20-year-old prohibition on federal funding for subway tunneling there on February 7, 2007.

2016: Metro takes delivery of the 900th and final New Flyer XN40 bus, completing an order of new compressed natural gas (CNG) buses that comprise 40% of the current fleet.
