May 2: This Date in Los Angeles Transportation History

2001:  The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, in partnership with Caltrans, opens a new southbound carpool lane along the San Gabriel River Freeway (I-605) between South Street and the Los Angeles County-Orange County line.

The 3.3-mile addition provides congestion relief to the Gateway Cities and improves the air quality of adjacent neighborhoods.
